The Athens Classic Marathon traces the legendary route of Pheidippides, the ancient Athenian messenger who ran from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens to announce the Greek victory over Persia. Today's race follows the same 42.2 km from the village of Marathon to the historic Panathenaic Stadium in central Athens — the same marble stadium that hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. It is not a course for PBs: the route climbs relentlessly from km 10 to km 31 (375m of cumulative gain), peaking at Stavros before a quad-burning descent into the city. But crossing into the stadium, running the final lap on white marble, and hearing your name announced in both Greek and your own language is an emotional experience that no flat fast course can replicate. November temperatures are manageable but variable. Come for history, not the clock.
