Brussels' marathon runs through the institutional heart of Europe. The course passes the Grand Place (one of the world's most beautiful town squares, a UNESCO site), the Art Nouveau neighbourhood of Saint-Gilles, the Cinquantenaire triumphal arches, and the Atomium — the stainless-steel sphere built for the 1958 World's Fair. The final kilometres run through the Forêt de Soignes, a primeval beech forest on the city's southeastern edge that turns spectacular in October. The 160m of elevation includes several significant climbs through Brussels' hilly geography. October conditions are cool and typically manageable, though Belgium's notoriously variable weather means preparation for rain is sensible.
