Chiang Mai's marathon is one of Southeast Asia's most atmospheric and culturally rich running events. The course circles the ancient walled city with its moat, runs through Tha Phae Gate and past the 25 Buddhist temples within the old city walls, into the Nimmanhaemin gallery and café district, and out into the cooler Mae Sa valley countryside. January is Thailand's cool dry season — mornings of 15–22°C are cool by Thai standards and the most comfortable running conditions in the country. The combination of temple bells, saffron-robed monks, and flower markets makes this a genuinely unique marathon aesthetic. Chiang Mai's large international expat and backpacker community gives the race a cosmopolitan character far beyond the typical regional Asian marathon.
