Colombo's marathon runs along the Indian Ocean coastline of Sri Lanka's capital — one of the most scenically distinctive settings in South Asian running. The flat course (25m elevation) runs along Galle Face Green (a large urban park on the ocean), through the colonial Fort district with its Victorian-era buildings, past the Dutch Hospital shopping complex, and along Marine Drive's ocean frontage. January brings Colombo's driest and coolest period — 25–31°C with lower humidity than other months. This is still a heat challenge for non-acclimatised runners, but the ocean breeze and the beauty of the Indian Ocean at dawn make it worthwhile. Sri Lanka's extraordinary hospitality culture means spectators and volunteers are exceptionally welcoming.
