Lisbon's marathon route runs from the coastal resort of Cascais along the north shore of the Tagus River estuary into historic Lisbon, finishing near the Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery — two of Portugal's most celebrated UNESCO landmarks. The 290m of elevation is distributed across relentless rolling hills through the Estoril coast and Belém's streets; this is not a flat course and the hills in the second half can be brutal on tired legs. October temperatures of 16–22°C are manageable. What Lisbon offers is a combination of exceptional scenery — Atlantic coastline, 16th-century monasteries, traditional azulejo tile architecture — and a genuinely vibrant post-race city experience. Portuguese crowd support is warm and vocal.
