Zurich's marathon uses the Lake Zurich shoreline for its most spectacular section, running along the Quaianlage waterfront with the Glarus Alps visible in the distance on clear April days. The course also winds through the Old Town (Altstadt) with its medieval guildhalls, the Langstrasse neighbourhood, and the lakeside parks of Zürichhorn and Arboretum. The 195m of elevation is distributed across several climbs through Zurich's hilly terrain. April conditions are variable — 10–18°C — with Switzerland's characteristic weather unpredictability. Swiss organisation is predictably excellent: precision timing, well-positioned aid stations, and a smooth expo. The city's position at the heart of European rail connections makes it an easy marathon travel destination.
