Named for a collection of local restaurants (Grandma's) rather than any actual grandmother, this Duluth institution has been running since 1977 and remains one of America's most authentic marathon experiences. The point-to-point route runs south along Minnesota's North Shore from Two Harbors to Canal Park on the edge of Lake Superior — a scenically magnificent stretch of lakeshore highway. The 165m of elevation is spread across gentle rollers in the first half; the second half descends to the lake. June temperatures are variable (10–22°C) — the Great Lakes weather system can bring anything. The small-town Midwestern hospitality, the sight of Lake Superior throughout, and the finish in the Duluth ship canal area make this a race that runners return to year after year.
