Hamburg's marathon is one of Germany's most prestigious after Berlin, and for good reason. The near-flat course (70m elevation) runs through the Outer Alster Lake's tree-lined promenade, past the historic Speicherstadt red-brick warehouse district (UNESCO), along the Elbe riverfront at the Container Terminal, and through the Blankenese residential hills. April conditions are typically good — 10–16°C — and Hamburg's cosmopolitan character means excellent race infrastructure. The start and finish at the Mönckebergstrasse in the city centre puts runners in the heart of one of Europe's great port cities. The race attracts strong international fields and Hamburg's civic pride makes for outstanding crowd support throughout.
