About this race

The Kathmandu International Marathon is the centrepiece of Nepal's growing running scene, held in November during the post-monsoon dry season when the skies clear and Himalayan views are at their most spectacular. The course runs through Kathmandu's extraordinary historic core: past Boudhanath Stupa (one of the world's largest Buddhist stupas), Pashupatinath Temple on the Bagmati River, the Durbar Squares of Patan and Basantapur, and through the chaotic alleys of the old city. The 480m of elevation and 1,400m altitude combine to make this extremely demanding for unacclimatised runners. November conditions of 8–18°C are ideal temperature-wise. The cultural experience — monks, sadhus, ancient temples, and medieval streetscapes — is unlike any other marathon setting.
