Lucerne's marathon is one of the most scenically beautiful courses in Europe. The route runs along the northern shore of Lake Lucerne past the famous Chapel Bridge (Europe's oldest wooden bridge), through the medieval old town, past the Lion Monument, and along the lake promenade with Mounts Rigi and Pilatus reflected in the glacier-fed water. The 160m of elevation includes moderate lakeside rolling. October conditions of 7–14°C are crisp alpine autumn. Organisation is characteristically Swiss — punctual, precise, and well-provisioned — and the course is closed to traffic throughout. The combination of medieval architecture, mountain backdrops, and lake reflections makes for one of the most photographed marathon routes in the Alps.
