Malta's marathon crosses one of the world's smallest and most densely historical countries — a Mediterranean island no bigger than a mid-sized city, yet containing layers of history from prehistoric temples (the world's oldest freestanding stone structures) to Phoenician traders, Roman rule, Knights of St John fortifications, Napoleonic occupation, and British colonial architecture. The course crosses the island from Mdina (the ancient hilltop capital) to Valletta (the UNESCO-listed current capital), passing through characteristic limestone villages, along clifftop roads, and through the Grand Harbour area. The 385m of elevation is severe — Malta's topography is unforgiving. February conditions of 12–18°C are pleasant. This is a race for adventurous runners who want history and character over PBs.
