The Fujisan Marathon is Japan's most scenically spectacular road race — the course circles the north shore of Kawaguchiko Lake with Japan's sacred Mount Fuji (3,776m, perfectly cone-shaped, snow-capped by November) dominating the skyline throughout. The 355m of elevation comes from the genuine hilliness of Fuji's lower volcanic flanks. Entry is by lottery due to extreme demand from Japanese and international runners. November conditions of 5–13°C are ideal for racing and the koyo (autumn leaf colour) peaks in the surrounding Fuji Five Lakes region at exactly this time — the maple and ginkgo colours along the course are extraordinary. The race is capped at approximately 10,000 runners to preserve the course quality and mountain access permits.
