Great for newcomers — manageable course, strong support
Hiroshima's marathon is Japan's most emotionally resonant race. The course passes within metres of the A-Bomb Dome (Genbaku Dome) — the UNESCO-listed skeletal ruin preserved at the epicentre of the 1945 atomic bombing — and through the Peace Memorial Park with its Children's Peace Monument and eternal flame. The rest of the course runs along Hiroshima's famous seven river delta islands (which give the city its characteristic flat geography), through the Hiroshima Castle grounds, and along the Ōta River's tree-lined parkways. The 80m of elevation is minimal — Hiroshima's delta geography makes this a flat, manageable course. March conditions of 8–15°C are good for racing. The spiritual weight of the setting makes Hiroshima uniquely moving.
