About this race

Rio de Janeiro's marathon is one of the world's most visually spectacular — and one of its most challenging. The course passes through Botafogo bay with Sugarloaf Mountain as backdrop, along the famous beaches of Leme, Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, and São Conrado, through the forest of Tijuca National Park, and back along the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. Christ the Redeemer is visible from multiple sections. The 310m of elevation, combined with June conditions (22–28°C, high humidity), makes this a race of experience and spectacle rather than performance. June is Rio's cooler, drier autumn period — the best time of year to run the city — but temperatures still climb as the race progresses. International atmosphere, samba drums at aid stations, and crowd support of Rio's Carnival spirit.
