São Paulo's marathon has grown into one of the hemisphere's largest running events with 40,000+ participants — and the scale of the course matches the ambition of South America's largest metropolis. The route uses São Paulo's massive highway network and runs through unique environments including the 3km Ayrton Senna Tunnel (completely enclosed) and the elevated Minhocão freeway (normally a traffic artery; closed exclusively for the race). The 475m of elevation reflects São Paulo's rolling Paulista plateau terrain. May is the São Paulo autumn season — temperatures of 16–22°C are the best of the year. The energy of the city — samba drummers, percussionists, outdoor food stalls — creates a party atmosphere through the streets. Organisers provide excellent support infrastructure for this mega-event.
