Named for Alexander the Great (who was born 80km away in Pella), Thessaloniki's marathon traces a loop around Greece's second city. The course runs along the Thermaikos Gulf waterfront promenade, past the iconic White Tower, through the Roman Arch of Galerius, up into the Ano Poli (Upper Town) Byzantine quarter with its Ottoman-era towers and Byzantine walls, and back along the seafront. On clear November days, Mount Olympus is visible to the southwest. The 95m of elevation is spread across the upper town sections. November conditions are mild — 12–18°C — and Thessaloniki's renowned food culture (it's considered Greece's culinary capital) makes post-race dining exceptional.
