Auckland's marathon is New Zealand's largest running event and features one of the world's great structural centrepieces: crossing the Auckland Harbour Bridge on foot — something normally forbidden to pedestrians. The course starts near Sky Tower, crosses the harbour on the bridge's pedestrian walkway (added specially for race day), runs along Tamaki Drive's celebrated waterfront through Mission Bay, St Heliers, and Glen Innes, before returning through Parnell to the waterfront finish. The 155m of elevation includes the harbour bridge approach ramps and several rolling suburban sections. October is New Zealand spring — 14–20°C, excellent conditions. Auckland's waterfront finish, with Waitemata Harbour and the Sky Tower behind, is spectacular.
