Belfast's City Marathon is one of Ireland's largest and most storied running events, held on the May Bank Holiday Monday with a tangibly festive atmosphere. The course passes the iconic Titanic Belfast museum in the Cathedral Quarter, through the Victorian splendour of Botanic Gardens and Queen's University, along the River Lagan towpath, and through the regenerated Titanic Quarter's towering cranes. The 175m of elevation reflects Belfast's genuine hills — this is not a flat city, and the course's climbs through east Belfast require honest pacing. May conditions of 9–17°C are generally kind. Northern Ireland's passionate community — this is a relay as much as a solo race, with thousands of relay teams — makes for extraordinary atmosphere.
