Kraków is Poland's cultural capital — home to Wawel Castle, Jagiellonian University (one of the world's oldest), and the remarkably preserved medieval old town (UNESCO). The marathon course circles the Planty gardens that ring the old town walls, runs past the Wawel Cathedral and Castle perched on a limestone outcrop above the Vistula, through the atmospheric Kazimierz Jewish Quarter, and along the Vistula River. With just 60m of elevation gain, this is a near-flat course. April conditions of 10–17°C are pleasant. Polish running culture has grown dramatically in recent years — crowds are knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and Kraków's post-race food scene (żurek soup, pierogi, zapiekanka) is outstanding.
