Bogotá's marathon is one of the hemisphere's most demanding — run entirely at 2,600m above sea level in the Colombian capital. The course runs along the famous Ciclovía (the weekly car-free cycling corridor that Bogotá closes for runners and cyclists) and through the leafy Chapinero and Usaquén neighbourhoods north of the city centre. The 340m of elevation on top of an already high-altitude base makes this extremely challenging for unacclimatised runners. July is Bogotá's dry season — temperatures of 7–17°C feel deceptively cool given the altitude. The race is the centrepiece of Bogotá's extraordinary running culture — a city with 8 million people and one of the world's best cycling and running infrastructures.
