Great for newcomers — manageable course, strong support
Richmond's marathon has grown into one of the mid-Atlantic's most beloved events. The course loops through the historic Fan District (fan-shaped Victorian architecture), across the James River bridges, through Manchester and Church Hill, and finishes on Broad Street. The 155m of elevation is spread across Richmond's genuine hills — the city isn't flat, but the challenges are manageable and the descents are fast. November conditions of 8–14°C are excellent. Richmond's post-race culture — Virginia craft beer, Southern barbecue — is legendary in the US running community. The course support is outstanding for a mid-size city event, with spectators packing the Fan District and Church Hill sections.
