San Sebastián is consistently rated the world's most beautiful small city and its marathon does justice to the setting. The course loops around the La Concha Bay — described by Queen María Cristina as the most beautiful bay in the world — climbs the slopes of Monte Urgull, runs through the old town's pintxos bar streets, and passes the Belle Époque Grand Casino. The 215m of elevation includes the Urgull climb and several rolling hills through the surrounding Basque countryside. April conditions are variable — the Basque Country's Atlantic climate means rain is always possible, but the green hills and sea backdrop are spectacular in any weather. The post-race pintxos and txakoli wine culture is among the finest in Spanish running.
