Wrocław — Poland's fourth-largest city and the 2016 European Capital of Culture — hosts one of Poland's finest marathons across its network of over 100 bridges spanning the Oder River and its multiple streams. The course crosses Tumski Island (Cathedral Island, home to the magnificent Gothic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist), passes Market Square with its extraordinary medieval cloth hall, and runs along the Oder promenades through Wrocław's rejuvenated waterfront. The near-flat course (55m elevation) mirrors the city's medieval riverside character. September conditions of 10–18°C are excellent. Wrocław's running community is enthusiastic and growing, and the city's famous gnome statues (300+ of them) along the course have become a beloved quirk of the race.
