The Cairo International Marathon offers an unmatched historical backdrop for any marathon anywhere in the world. The course passes the Giza Plateau with the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Great Sphinx visible at dawn across the desert plateau — a sight that justifies the trip alone. The route runs along the Nile Corniche, through Zamalek island, past the Egyptian Museum (home to Tutankhamun's treasures), into Old Cairo's Coptic quarter, and through the Khan el-Khalili medieval bazaar district. January conditions of 12–19°C are excellent for racing; Cairo's winter is among the most comfortable of any North African or Middle Eastern marathon window. Growing international interest has expanded the field substantially.
