Tunis's marathon runs through one of the Mediterranean world's most historically layered cities — the capital of Tunisia, where Phoenician Carthage once challenged Rome for dominance of the ancient world. The course passes through the UNESCO-listed medina with its 9th-century mosques and covered souks, along the Avenue Habib Bourguiba (the Champs-Élysées of North Africa), past the Bardo National Museum (home of the world's finest Roman mosaic collection), and along the Gulf of Tunis coastline toward the Carthage ruins site. November conditions of 14–20°C are excellent. Tunisia's accessibility from Europe (short flights from Paris, Rome, and Madrid) makes this a natural North African destination race for European runners.
