Durban's marathon is South Africa's coastal counterpart to Cape Town's mountain-framed race — a hilly but spectacular course along KwaZulu-Natal's subtropical Indian Ocean coast. The route runs along the famous Golden Mile beachfront promenade, through Durban's vibrant Indian Quarter (the largest concentration of Indians outside India), past the Comrades Marathon start line in Pietermaritzburg direction, and along the Umgeni River mouth. The 165m of elevation comes from Durban's rolling Berea ridge terrain. May is the start of Durban's dry season — temperatures of 17–24°C are ideal, and the lingering summer lushness of KwaZulu-Natal's subtropical vegetation makes the course visually distinctive. Durban is South Africa's surf capital and the informal home of the Comrades Ultra-Marathon culture.
