Dar es Salaam's marathon is East Africa's coastal counterpart to Nairobi's highland race — a hot, flat course through Tanzania's economic capital along the Indian Ocean waterfront. The route runs along the Msasani Peninsula's upmarket beach district, through the city centre past Askari Monument, through the Kariakoo market's extraordinary density of commerce, along the harbour waterfront, and past State House. August is the cool dry season for Dar es Salaam — temperatures of 23–28°C are warm but the humidity drops compared to the wet season, and the Indian Ocean breeze provides some relief. The race attracts runners from across East Africa alongside international participants visiting Tanzania for Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, and the Serengeti.
