Kigali's Peace Marathon is run in the world's most improbable setting for a celebration of peace and achievement: the capital of Rwanda, 30 years after the 1994 genocide, now one of Africa's cleanest, safest, and most rapidly developing cities. The race name is not metaphorical — it's a genuine commemoration of reconciliation. At 1,600m altitude, across Kigali's genuinely hilly terrain (580m gain), this is an extremely demanding course. May is the short dry season — temperatures of 18–25°C are manageable. The course runs through all of Kigali's central neighbourhoods: Nyamirambo, Kiyovu, the CBD, Gisozi, and the Kacyiru government district. Running through Rwanda's transformation is a uniquely moving and perspective-altering experience.
