Mombasa's marathon is Kenya's coastal race — very different in character from the highland altitude running culture of Nairobi and Iten. The course runs through Old Town Mombasa's labyrinthine Swahili Arab-Portuguese streets, past Fort Jesus (the 16th-century Portuguese fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site), across the Nyali Bridge over the Old Port, through Mombasa's beach resort north coast, and along the Likoni channel ferry route area. August is Kenya's cool dry season — temperatures of 23–29°C with Indian Ocean humidity are warm, and an early start is essential. Mombasa's Swahili culture, coconut-groved coast, and deep-sea fishing tradition make it one of East Africa's most distinctive marathon destinations for runners combining a race with a beach holiday.
