Accra's marathon is the flagship race of West Africa's most stable and internationally welcoming country — Ghana, the 'Gateway to Africa'. The course runs through Accra's diverse neighbourhoods: Jamestown's fishing village and Victorian lighthouse, the Makola market's extraordinary density, past Independence Square on the Atlantic oceanfront (where Ghana's independence was declared in 1957), and through Osu's international restaurant and expat district. November conditions of 26–31°C with Atlantic humidity are warm — early starts are essential, and heat management is the primary consideration. Ghana's Year of Return campaign has made Accra a significant African-diaspora destination, and the marathon draws international runners connecting with West African heritage. The Highlife and Afrobeats music throughout the course is unmistakable.
