Helsinki's marathon runs through one of Scandinavia's most distinctive cities on the warmest weekend of the Finnish year. The course passes the Senate Square with Helsinki Cathedral, the Esplanade park, the Market Square harbour, the Kaivopuisto seaside park, and loops through the forested island park of Seurasaari. The 135m of elevation reflects Helsinki's granite coastal topography — genuinely rolling in places. August temperatures of 16–23°C are Helsinki's warmest, with daylight lasting past 9 PM. Finnish running culture is serious and the event is well-organised with characteristic Nordic efficiency. Post-race sauna is mandatory — Helsinki has more saunas per capita than any city in the world.
